South China HSE Network 6th Meeting & Technical Visit

December 28 (Monday)
Most of the participants, including a group of OUHK students, arrived Guangzhou in the evening of December 28, and stayed at the guest house of SYSU.
December 29 (Tuesday)
Morning Sharing Session:
The morning session of the 6th meeting was held at:

3rd Floor, Lingnan Hall, Guangzhou Sun Yat Sen University, Lingnan Hall
• Welcoming remarks were provided by the Dean of the SYSU Lingnan College and Mr Liu Jianqing of GD SAWS presented the latest development of occupational hygiene management and regulatory development in China and in GD.
• Dr Chen Ying from GDEPB presented very detailed regional air quality status in the Pearl River Delta region. Some specifics guidelines and control actions were provided by Dr. Chen (unfortunately, we were not able to get a copy of his presentation).
• This was followed by a presentation by the EHS Academy (Prof. Wang and Mr Qian) outlining the work at EHS Academy and the progress of their projects in promoting EHS training in the university. Prof. Wang also proposed a nation-wide EHS club to be developed and informed the audience of higher education opportunities in the university.
• Mr. Samuel Kwong then shared his learning and experience of a Japan technical visit solid waste treatment and waste-to-energy incineration facilities in Tokyo. The experience in Japan regarding waste segregation to reduce volume of solid waste, the intense monitoring of air pollutants (including dioxins) and the effective air emission control measures attracted a lot of interests from the audience. • A panel discussion then followed before the close of the morning session. Panel members (including Lam Wan Choi, Samuel Kwong et al) suggested that a nation-wide network is quite aggressive, and a regional based network could facilitate more on members meetings, sharing and more focused interactions on regional issues in South China.
• A Group Photo was taken after lunch at the South Lawn Restaurant of SYSU (at members’ own costs).
Afternoon Technical Visit:
Network members then paid a technical visit to 3M’s South China Technical Centre located at the Guangzhou Science City. Members were impressed by the scale of products that 3M developed and spent good time in the demonstration centre.
Michael Cao then presented 3M’s EHS Management System which included a robust global H&S plan and global environmental management self-assessment.
Members were also impressed by the very professional presentation by Ms Skye Liu, on Personal Protection for Personnel involving in H1N1 Influenza Emergency Response. The
technical standards and criteria of various masks and respirators as well as the protection mechanism were presented. (Details please see the slides in the South China Googlegroup file archived).
Finally, Mr Malone Wu, shared BP’s International Driving Championship (IDC) for drivers in promoting driving safety in China and in demonstrating BP’s leadership and commitment in the area of road safety. The technical visit finished at 17:30pm, and members returned to their home based at various parts (Huizhou, Donggang, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Zhuhai etc..)
